Intergenerational Program Director

 

Background

Calvin Presbyterian Church is an approximately 400-member congregation that for over 50 years has served Tigard, OR and the surrounding Portland metropolitan area. While the congregation is very proud of its beginnings, its history and its culture, it has for the past five years been reexamining itself – to both affirm and explicitly state its own core values and also become a more integral part of the communities it serves.

With the assistance of noted author and visionary consultant Kevin Graham Ford, the church has affirmed the following key characteristics:

The congregation is now actively engaged in integrating these elements into all its activities. It is currently in the midst of a rebranding process to enhance its connectedness to the communities it serves. It is also participating in a year-long cohort of churches who are similarly committed to integrating an intergenerational mindset into all that they do.

 

Description of the Need

The congregation is seeking a full-time Parish Associate or layperson with the required skills and experience to serve as its Intergenerational Program Coordinator (IPC), working side-by-side with its Pastor and in close coordination with its Session, Management Team, and various Committees to ensure and sustain a truly intergenerational environment.

The initial primary responsibility of the IPC will be to develop a congregation-wide Christian faith formation program for all ages (“cradle to grave”) that is marked by:

  • Mutuality – sharing relationships, experiences, activities, and resources among generations
  • Reciprocity – ensuring equal standing, value, and exchanged benefits among generations
  • Accommodation – ensuring that each generation is ready and able to give up one or more rights/privileges as necessary to ensure that all generations may fully participate in congregational life.

The congregation-wide Christian faith formation program will be established under the IPC’s leadership and will address four broad areas:

  1. Worship
  2. Fellowship
  3. Mission and service
  4. Christian formation and discipleship

As the leader of this effort, the IPC will be the major designer, implementer and advocate for developing a program that addresses key performance indicators (KPI’s) that have been previously established by the church’s leadership teams.

The IPC will also be expected to work with congregational leaders and staff to audit and modify existing programs and ministries so that they become intergenerationally focused. In conjunction with this, the IPC will also be engaged in the regular development of special intergenerational opportunities (including for example retreats, mission trips/outings, studies and small group/relationship building events that connect and serve all generations.

 

Position Description

The church envisions that the selected IPC will assume a full-time position with a starting annual compensation package of approximately $70,000. The position will initially be established on a year-to-year contract basis but with no definitive sunset and with the expectation that it will endure for at least three years.  The church will give fair consideration to all applicants and is especially interested in applicants with the following characteristics:

  • Formal education and degrees in religious studies
  • Demonstrable fluency in written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in planning, implementing, managing and evaluating successful intergenerational programs and activities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, social media, and church management software; and
  • Personal characteristics of initiative, curiosity, outward focus, humility, and willfulness
